I’m still leaning stuff now. I’m 52 and I’ve been in the business since 1979. If I am still eager to learn and if there’s still lots of things I can learn, then there’s stuff that anybody can learn.

Local musicians gather at the Oncenter to hone their skills

Syracuse played host to the Second Annual Music Industry Conference Nov. 11 and 12.
Musicians from as far away as Wisconsin have gathered at the Oncenter to participate in workshops, showcases, panel discussions, and lectures from music industry leaders such as Martin Atkins.

Professionals

Atkins has been a part of the music business since the 1970s. He started as a drummer for various bands including Public Image Ltd., a band fronted by former Sex Pistols singer John Lydon.

Currently, Atkins is teaching at the Madison Media Institute, a media arts college in Madison, Wisc. Atkins likes to share his experiences with the music industry so that others can learn from his work.

“I’ve been in the business for a long time, so I’m old and I’ve made a lot of mistakes,” aid Atkins. “I’m ok with telling people about those $60,000 mistakes.”

Learning

Atkins enjoys teaching partly because he enjoys learning. Atkins says he’s still learning new things about the business.

“I’m 52 and I’ve been in the business since 1979,” said Atkins. “If I am still eager to learn and if there’s still lots of things I can learn, then there’s stuff that anybody can learn.”

Next Year

The bands and other musicians that participated in this year’s Music Industry Conference take with them a new understanding and knowledge about the music business and how to brand themselves.
